Tyne Tees Television programme from 1970 presented by David Taylor on the career of footballer George Hardwick, with emphasis on his job as manager of Gateshead AFC, a club struggling against financial problems and lack of support.
The film opens with a view of Newcastle followed by Gateshead AFC. George Hardwick walks out of the Manager's office.
In the team dressing room before a Northern Premier League game against Gainsborough Trinity he gives a pep talk to the team. Out on the pitch the team are being watched by a small group of supporters who are cheering. The kick off is followed by views of the match. Archive footage shows George Hardwick as captain of England in the 1940s during the Great Britain v the Rest of Europe match at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Great Britain won the match 6-1.
There is a newspaper article about Middlesbrough's triple signing in 1937 and various photos of Hardwick in his heyday. Interview with an unknown man who remembers how Hardwick scored an own goal on his debut and about his career at Middlesbrough after the war, when there was a team full of good players.
George Hardwick coaches a youth team at Gateshead. He then talks with former colleague, Wilf Mannion, about old times. Hardwick gives a voice-over about the skills of Mannion and the team.
There is further archive footage of "England triumph over Wales" and World Cup qualifying match at Cardiff in which Jackie Milburn scored four goals. In the voice-over Milburn recalls other days that were not so good when George Hardwick helped him get through the match. On a South Shields golf course Hardwick, Milburn and Len Shackleton play a round and chat.
Interview with George Hardwick conducted by David Taylor. They talk about his career - 36 caps for England, 13 good years at Middlesbrough and a £17,000 transfer to Oldham Athletic as player/manager. Hardwick recalls that the problems arose when he wanted to stop playing - contract problems etc. He also talks about his short stay at Sunderland where he was dismissed from his job as manager.
Interview with Brian Clough, who was at Sunderland at the time. He thinks that Hardwick was badly treated by the board. Various interviews about management - comments from Milburn and Clough, who says "you've got to be good to stay in this game".
George Hardwick chats to players after the match. In the voice-over he talks about his work in sports journalism, which he does as well as managing Gateshead. There is a photograph of the team followed by more archive footage of present day action watched by Hardwick at Gateshead. The team is seen leaving the pitch and the after match analysis in the dressing room. There are views of Redheugh Park followed by George Hardwick talking about the problems he is having at Gateshead but that he does it because it is the greatest game in the world! David Taylor comments at the end that since this film was shot, Hardwick has resigned from Gateshead.

Gateshead finally lifted the Durham Challenge Cup, after over coming neighbours Dunston 2-0 at The Hetton Centre on a sunny Good Friday. An impressive young side mainly made up of College players was captained by Paul Farman who lifted the cup. First team squad members James Marwood and Jonny Allan hit the only goals of the match either side of half time.

This should bring back some brilliant memories, and a good laugh at the commentators. Gateshead went to then Football League side Halifax Town in the 1st Round of the FA Cup and won 2-0 thanks to a Tony Hall header and a second half goal on the break by left-winger Paul Dalton.
