Southern

Heed Army & Tynesider

Over the past two and a bit seasons one man has been the most consistent, be it with goals or assists. Davie Southern has been behind, and on the end most of the Tynesiders attacks during his time at Gateshead. He finished top goal scorer in the UniBond Premier in the 06/07 season with over 30 goals to his name, and last season he was also club top scorer for the second season in a row with 22 goals to his name.

He has formed a fruitful partnership up front with Graeme Armstrong, which has seen them both flourish and find the net consistently. Last season Armstrong netted 20 times in his first season in a Heed shirt.

Davie Southern had a prolific record at his two clubs prior to joining Gateshead. Having left the Tynesiders after a brief early spell he went on to play Northern League football for Dunston Fed where he carved out a reputation as a goal machine in the league, playing alongside Graeme Armstrong the partnership scored Dunston two Northern League titles in a row (with both scoring over well over 20 goals a piece over two seasons). Southern went on to Join Newcastle Blue Star for their penultimate Northern League campaign winning the title under the leadership of part-time Coronation Street Newsagent Tony Lee. When Lee left Blue Star to take over at Gateshead Southern followed and a fruitful period for Gateshead began.

Southern’s drive whilst on the ball has not just helped his strike partners get on the score sheet, his vision over the past two seasons was that of a hawk. Spreading ball like butter across the pitch, with pin point accuracy. The new campaign has seen Southern playing as part of a three up front, similar to the back end of last season’s very successful promotion campaign. Southern hasn’t found himself on the score sheet as of yet, but a goal is well over due for the Gateshead lad.

The Heed Army is ready to roar when this first Conf North goal comes his way!!!!
